Finding yourself with more client work than you can handle can be exciting — but also stressful!
Getting the help of an independent contractor can be a great way to relieve some of that stress . . . but before you hire a contractor on a handshake, you should know this:
Under U.S. copyright laws (and in many other countries), by default independent contractors own whatever copyrightable works they create — even if it’s within the scope of your agreement!
That means if you hire an independent contractor to create code, designs, reports, or any other copyrightable work . . . you generally will not own the copyright unless the contractor explicitly transfers it to you in a valid and legally binding agreement.
And if you don’t own the copyright, you won’t be able to use the work however you want!
With this Independent Contractor Agreement (with Statement of Work) customizable template and training, I’ll walk you through creating a project-based contract that covers all essential terms — including the full transfer of intellectual property rights… to YOU!
The contract can also serve as a roadmap for everything you need to discuss with your contractor, including deliverables, milestones, revisions, compensation, and more.
Since I’m a licensed business and IP lawyer with extensive experience, you can be sure you’re getting reliable information from a knowledgeable source. If you can’t hire a lawyer directly . . . this is the next best thing.
Completing the training and template typically only takes 1-2 hours. When you’re finished, you’ll have a fully customized agreement ready to go for your next project!
